The manga has the same issue as the anime (and likely the source material): this flashback reads like a contrived sob story. I'm not saying the main plot is filled with nuanced, lifelike characters, but this still feels considerably worse.

If you insist on doing a MTL, at least use a better translator, like DeepL.

That is actually a very good thing. The anime covered these parts until the end in like two episodes, and the end result was terrible. Hopefully the plot will feel less nonsensical with proper story time given to it.
