Interesting. Thanks!

If you don't mind, may I quote your comment in a Notes page?
Go for it, I guess. I don't need the credit, but I'm happy to accept it.

I was confused, so I came to the comments to see if someone knew what was up, but apparently I was just as confused as everyone else. And then my engineering (furigana: AuDHD) brain went into problem-solving mode.

I feel like the ideal translation probably turns it into rhyming word association or puns or something in English, but given the context of the conversation, that seems pretty difficult. I wouldn't blame anyone for taking the approach of "hae (fly)" "hie (millet)" etc., even if it's normally considered a cop-out.

I am happy for a team to have picked this up again but I Hope the fact that it didn't end in chapter 100 doesn't mean that it was axed.

I think I just figured it out: It's word association. I'm assuming his previous message was へえ/hee (huh, is that so). She responds with ブンブンブン (onomatopoeia for a buzzing sound), basically saying "bzzt, wrong, that's not how you have a conversation". His response is はえ/hae (蠅, fly). From there she's basically giving him riddles: substitute grain is ひえ/hie (稗, millet), recorder is ふえ/hue (笛, flute).
Hae, hie and fue also follow alphabetical order, don't know if it means anything
