I thought it was more common for dudes to play as female characters. Hell, I even do it myself. If I'm gonna spend that much time seeing my character, I want it to be visually appealing to me.

@genR According to at least one other series I've read, people using software to modify their voice is not terribly uncommon in Japan (probably more common elsewhere than you might expect too, trolls trolling trolls out there and all). You can go download that kind of software for use with stuff like Discord right now if you want, for free, and annoy your friends or enemies with weird voices any time you want.

@Glomoro True, voice changers could have been a decent explanation here. I've actually played with a guy who'd use it to fuck around in pubs but that possibility didn't cross my mind. I guess I'd make a terrible romcom writer. My own reaction to most of these situations is more "just admit the truth, probably nobody actually cares" rather than "need a new scheme to double down on the deception".

Anyway it's all moot because chapter 8 page 3 kills the voice changer theory and seems to say that it's the first time they use voice chat.

In the end I stopped expecting any more realism from this series than your average isekai. Chapter 9 has MMC dress up in drag. No mention of where he found that cute dress, frilly shirt, or wig. All that matters is that he passes ! Thoughts on practicality need not apply.

regarding voice chat.

The premise is so retarded. Who the fuck ends up being close enough to setup an irl meeting yet can't be bothered to take it to voice chat first

@genR I don't know what unrealistic about not using voice chat. And I'm gonna say that it's oppsoite. "not doing voice chat is retarded" is kinda arrogant assumption.

Maybe we live in different background and culture. But just be aware that even before the era of mumble, teamspeak, discord, etc. People who only doing text chat such as IRC also occasionally doing IRL meetup. And it's turned out to be fine.

A friend flied from Australia to Liuthania to met another IRC friend there. They only know each other via IRC, but they got no problem with meeting up IRL. Yeah, that's a real story, and I don't think that's a retarded situation. And I'm sure there are other community in different platform that also doing the same. Whether that a friends from an in-game chat, or a buddy from a mailing list.

@ices You're deviating quite a lot from what I was saying. I guess I wasn't clear.

First, I didn't call not-using-voice-chat retarded, I called the manga retarded. And I kinda harped on the voice chat thing as a pretty obvious way the whole chapter 1 plot point should have been resolved before it appeared (but there's more, so so so much more). At that point in time I was under the impression that the gender misrepresentation would end up being an issue but as we see it's completely irrelevant. And then obviously, my point doesn't stand, since with the insight of the later chapters we see mc is perfectly able to fake a female voice.

On voice chat. Yes many of the more technical communities tend to stick to text only but that does not apply to video game communities. I assumed the context made it obvious that I was talking about people meeting through a game. The thing with games is that anything somewhat fast paced or competitive will tie up both your hands and won't leave you much time to stop and start typing. Voice chat is not merely the lazier option it's often the only way to exchange information fast enough before it becomes obsolete. Not trying to imply it's mandatory, but in any somewhat organised play it becomes a more and more appealing option. (and it's confirmed in a later chapter that these guys were part of a guild)

I was also working with the implicit assumption that the story is taking place in the present. I've used AIM at a time it didn't have voice chat but that's not really relevant when discussing this manga where the mc is using a smartphone on page 1.

Yeah, I understand your point. Let me spell it out fully so that you also understand what my point is and what I think is arrogant: thinking that this manga retarded because "who the fuck ends up being close enough to setup an irl meeting yet can't be bothered to take it to voice chat first".

If you think this manga retarded because any other reason, I'm okay with that. Let that be clear? okay?

Hence I gives an example of people that I know who ends up being close enough to setup an irl meeting yet can't be bothered to take it to voice chat first.

If you think this manga retarded because of that reason? Yeah, that's arrogant assumption. I don't say that you're arrogant, I said that the assumption arrogant. Let that also be clear.

You agree with me on this?

Ok boomer. Yes, I can see why text only chat does not apply to video game communities. Especially in the present day. Even tho it's still debatable (i.e. introvert gamer, or the one with different cultural background), I can see the argument here. And I won't debate you for this.

If you think, yes, this manga plot retarded because: "Who the heck didn't use voice chat in their gaming community in this present day". I'm okay with that.

My god, this comment section is a dumpster fire. I wanted to ask if anyone knew if there actually is a longer version of the chapter (this being labeled "C94 sample"), but I think I'll just leave you all be.

@Zizhou Yes. Chapters 1, 11, and 28 are samples for physical doujins sold first at comiket, and now through melonbooks.

Ugh, really? No wonder chapter 28 is missing right now. I like what I've read so far, but... I'm not about to buy the doujinshi, and I don't like the idea that I'm missing characterization.

Re-reading this a second time and I just realized that the guy's player character looks a lot like Harukara (7th dragon)
