@boag Piracy is always a case of people choosing to steal stuff. The people who pirate are making a choice to do so. No one is forcing them into it. I'm not making a judgment call here, just pointing out that the responsibility for actions lies with the actors.

@SuperOniichan that is of course possible, but I assume translating is like contract work, so you'd need to have a business and all the stuff that goes along with that. Translators would have to put in a fair bit more effort to get it started by soliciting various manga companies. It is a fair investment at first if you are not hunted by a company to build up rep in the industry. Even if you've got reputation of the web for skill in scanlating and translating it doesn't always translate over to real world experience in thee eyes of everyone which is dumb.

Still it is possible and I imagine there is good money in it if you get to do popular manga. It isn't that hard to see what manga are popular by looking at mangadex and other manga scan site

Seriously, please stop; this translation is trash.
Pay for a good translator, and don't trash talk the author on this site.
REALLY DON'T TRASH THE AUTHOR.

@seraphus actually dude, you don't know what is happening, there is not just mangadex 's comment section, there is Reddit too and there is a lot of discussion going on about the author's requests, ( you need to read his twitter posts.) and in Reddit only 1 thing is going on that is how to buy this manga if it is officially released but not available in country, and I just collected those discussion points and requested the author. nothing else, I am not trash talking about the author

@Liquidxlax Well, I doubt that manga like Go-Toubun no Hanayome or Komi-san became popular due to the fact that people were just hyped due to reading synopsis.

Thanks for the translation. Just a comment, if it's hard to translate the slang don't worry about it overmuch. Gyaru-speak is supposed to be somewhat impenetrable anyway :)

@CFF0099, have you considered getting Amazon Prime, because it's ridiculous that shipping and handling is $36 for a small book like Monmusu. Is it being shipped to the ISS? Also, what's that "import fees deposit," do you get that back? And again, why is it so ridiculously high, more than 3x the value of the item itself? Finally, if you work in the IT industry and $90 is half of your monthly salary, you are being vastly ripped off and exploited.

Yes it is, but you cannot govern what an individual will do, no matter how many draconic and authoritarian laws you pass to stop the majority.
And choosing between restricting the rights of individuals to the extreme vs creating a free marketplace where you can obtain anything legally, which by the way are the only 2 anwsers there are to minimizing piracy, the latter will always be better than the former.

So yes, Piracy is a Service issue.
If people want your product they will do whatever is reasonable to them to get it.

@boag You basically just argued that, since burglars are going to break into and rob houses no matter how much security is installed, it is better to keep your belongings on the front lawn. And restricting the rights of individuals? It can be argued that one has the right to such things as life, liberty and the pursuit (note: not achievement) of happiness, or to food, shelter, medical care, and the like. One does not have the right to entertainment in general, but especially not the right to specific entertainment.

Unless they sell or otherwise transfer the rights to others, content creators have the right to control distribution of their product. That's part of that "free market" you mention. If I have the right to sell something, I also have the right to not sell something, and if I choose not to sell it, that does not give you the right to take it from me by force. If people want what's in your wallet, they will do whatever is reasonable to them to get it. Piracy is theft, and no amount of victim blaming will change that. "Piracy is a service issue!" is the cry of people who don't want to take responsibility for the fact that they are thieves. Own your shit.

Learn to make better analogies.

#1 burglars do not duplicate whatever they steal, depriving the original owner of the original object, which is why its called PIRACY not STEALING.

#2 installing security =/= removing the basic rights of the individuals, you can install all the security you want in your house, what you cannot do is shackle down everyone in your community under lock and key just so you feel safe.

#3 I specifically detailed what both options to mitigate piracy is, if you are able to come up with a 3rd solution I will hear it. Never did I imply that Entertainment is a right, so dont throw arguments at me for points i never made.

#4 I welcome the transfer of rights, notice how my original post made it clear that its a "Service problem", making your product or service readily available solves the issue.

#5 What force is being used to rob the original author of this manga? Threat of violence? Please detail your point, because I do not see how you equate someone duplicating, substantially altering and FREELY DISTRIBUTING the duplicated object with armed Robbery.

I will restate it here, learn to make better analogies.

That's my bad then; I've been involved with this manga here on Dex for a while.
After my group dropped it, two groups picked it up, and one of them got angry (because they did a terrible translation which I proofread, so it was totally on them) and contacted the author to try to get the whole series burned down if they weren't allowed to upload shitty translation copies.
So when it looks like somebody is trashing the author, or even bringing Dex to his attention, I get a little excitable.
Also, this translation really sucks balls in the worst way.

Theft is theft; special pleading doesn't change that. Piracy is a type of theft.

#1 Pirates didn't make copies of the cargo of the ships they captured and then let their targets go. Perhaps "piracy" is really not the term to use if you don't want your actions associated with theft.

#2 You still haven't established that any "basic rights of individuals" to access the property in question exist.

#3 The only options are never "ALL" or "NONE". The possibility of "SOME" exists. Grocery stores, for example, do not operate as EITHER having all product out unsupervised in the parking lot next to signs reading, "Please pay, or don't, your choice" OR escorting each shopper around the store under armed guard. This implies that similar mid-range solutions exist for other market scenarios. As for implying Entertainment is a right:

boag:

And choosing between restricting the rights of individuals to the extreme vs creating a free marketplace where you can obtain anything legally, which by the way are the only 2 anwsers there are to minimizing piracy, the latter will always be better than the former.

You link "restricting the rights of individuals" to an answer to "minimizing piracy", thereby implying that the "right" to the product is something that exists. Or, if I have misunderstood you and you agree that Entertainment is not a right, then what are your grounds for justifying the act of piracy as acceptable?

#4 Falling off a cliff is a gravity problem. Putting up rails and signs helps prevent that. You can't convince gravity to change its mind; it's a natural phenomenon without agency. Theft is a personal choice. People take action based on decisions that they hold personal responsibility for. The existence of piracy is not the fault of the market, it is the fault of those who choose to steal. Why are you so set in denying the agency of thieves?

#5 None of what you said in this point is relevant. "Copyright is the legal and exclusive right to copy, or permit to be copied, some specific work of art. If you own the copyright on something, someone else cannot make a copy of it without your permission." [Source A: https://www.whoishostingthis.com/resources/copyright-guide/] Fair Use provisions allow for parody, but the article linked makes a specific point about that with regards to music that is easily perceivable as applying to textual works as well:

Rewriting Song Lyrics for a Non-Parody Purpose

Suppose you want to write a musical, but you aren’t good at writing music. So you take songs that exist already and rewrite the words to fit your story. Unless you got permission from the copyright holder, that’s infringement.

For rewritten lyrics to be considered Fair Use, they must be a parody, which means they need to be using comedy or ridicule.

The article also discusses the criteria for something to be considered Fair Use:

The four criteria are:

1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes.
2. The nature of the copyrighted work
3 .The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Regarding point 4, research has found that, for completed series, piracy has a negative impact on sales. [Source B: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/2...-effects-are-more-nuanced-than-good-bad.shtml] It does point out that anti-piracy efforts reduce sales for ongoing series, but series move from Ongoing > Completed, not the other way around. So for many, many manga series, "someone duplicating, substantially altering and FREELY DISTRIBUTING the duplicated object" is actually stealing revenue from the copyright holder. Whether such laws should exist and in what form is a different argument for a different conversation; this is how the laws exist, and violation of the law is a crime, pretty much by definition. And just to complete the point, I never equated that action with armed robbery; for example, pickpockets exist.

Finally, regarding analogies, it turns out that you will never be able to create an analogy that is "sufficient" for someone who is determined to not change their mind. The examples I have given are accurate. If you refuse to see the connections because they are inconvenient to your point, that is on you.

To conclude, piracy is an act of theft, and it is a deliberate action taken by a person with agency, not an uncontrollable natural phenomenon. Which was the point I was making in the first place.
