@Moth, okay I’m sorry but that comment pissed me off. No, eastern countries are not influenced by western beauty standards as much as you think or making it out to be. In fact most beauty standards, and I’d argue almost all (very rarely not) beauty standards in Asian countries are influenced by their own culture and how that itself was formed etc. For instance, Asians don’t want to have fair, white, pale, whatever you want to call it skin because they want to look western but rather it’s because in history the lighter and well kept your skin is, is a clear indicator of wealth as you’re not working in the sun as much, or being noble or smth. Plus the two step sisters were never that ugly in the original story, slightly but not significantly if I remember correctly. Especially in the Disney adaption which did take a lot of creative liberties story wise by removing and changing a lot but still had its core ideas and concepts etcera.

Not all step mother is bad in real life. She should said the evil step mother, not just step mother.

it surbrising how just a bit of backstory on the evil step-mother would make me say. "huh, so that's why she harassed Cinderella... it actually makes sense"

Man if that's ugly then what am I... I hope the stepsisters lead happy lives at the very least, they give off the nice responsible sort-of feel. It's sort of refreshing to see characters that look... not perfect?

What do you mean, "ugly"?

I mean they have adorable button noses and freckles, but that seems to be the only difference from them being standard protagonist-style? >_>

Ah well, given the nature of the circumstances, I'll let it pass this once. Actually depicting these particular, much-beleaguered, would-be villains as ugly would indeed seem mean-spirited.

And how fashionably pretty they look could potentially indeed be germane to the issue of dowries, regardless of how they actually look, I suppose.

(Still—I'm nonetheless amused that the end-result is basically that they're drawn in what, in some western comic styles, is essentially regarded as peak adorable, moreso than Cinderella. Well—that said, I actually can't tell for sure whether it's supposed to parse like that to the Korean audience, or not.)

@daijokay
And her husband then was described as kind and rich, but ugly.

We got the ugly, and considering her age at the time, I guess we could call him a bastard. You all know the tag I am referring to...

Sigh.

Anyhow, is it just me or do her biological daughters actually feel a lot more comely than Cinderella? Her super sharp nose and weird facial features stand out when the image shows her and the other sisters together.

I guess it is more like 2 radically different styles that just seem like they are clashing?
