I just want to answer the part about what you said "caring and genuine",
for the people who don't know, but it's quite common for abusers* to act like this, it's a manipulation tactic that should become more common sense for people to know. So that these bastards make fewer victims.
This comment is more for people who don't know about it, I don't know if OP knows about it.
