I dislike "event" arcs in general when it comes to romcoms. School trips too. It just feels like filler because the author ran out of ideas or needs a catalyst to get some progress in the relationship going

Quite often it's not even that. It's just because "a school series is supposed to have school events." If you're writing a story, you don't give obligatory chocolates. You put your love into what you write.
