One thing I find really interesting is that in the afterword of LN Vol. 4, the original author said that Vol. 4 was basically a response to how the manga artist change in the adaptation of Alicia's personality.
So we have the manga artist going in a different direction from the original author, the anime adapting the manga artist's adaptation up to about just before this point since the manga hadn't gotten this far yet, so they took another completely different bent. And the original author coming up with new ideas based on the manga adaptation.
I think the author's note on volume 4 is a case where you need to read between the lines. It's reads similar to "I'm sorry you feel offended." It's not necessarily saying what it seems to be saying. And it doesn't inspire events in vol 4 at all.

Note on the LN series... A lot of the series is comedy centered around a nerdy, OP, leveling-up maniac girl. It's not slapstick humor, it's more "WTF is Yumiella thinking now??" humor. Plus "What crazy shit did Yumiella do this time?" humor.

I've read through vol 4 of official English LN and it's an enjoyable read, so I recommend it.

I'd say that that handling of Alicia here is a bit vanilla, but it's warm and fuzzy and it's not bad (though I still have a preference for LN Alicia).

Yes the artist has said on Twitter that the manga will be taking an alternative approach, with consent by both the original author and the editorial department.
Theory on how it can end differently if they still want Yumelia to get stabbed: Alicia sees dark magic users as black mists, so maybe in the fight she couldn't tell who's who and stabbed a random one in an emergency situation, which ends up being Yumelia.

I didn't read WN but I did buy LN and insta dropped it lol

so in LN vol.1 , (A bit long cuz I wanna rant lol)

Alicia is your usual flower head girl who read too much fairy tale about Witch Vs Saint blah blah blah so she firmly believed that Yumi. The dark magic user is gonna be enemy she has to defeat sooner or later. Like in fairy tale she read.

the level up section here in LN was she got forced to leveling with Yumi. Yumi went with spartan teaching because Alicia is wimpy and that make her scared shitless and into Do or Die mode and feel no grateful to Yumi after leveling(adding more PTSD on top of her delusion to dislike Yumi)

before Vol.1 end. Patrick and Yumi relationship is similar to manga. patrick asked her to change her growth amulet to protection one. to give him peace of mind so he can focus on fighting in kingdom and more flirting scene.

then the hero party(Yumi,Alicia and 3 capture targets) went to Demon king castle. The boys are kinda neutral to Yumi compared to their first meeting at this point and everything seems smooth so far. They fight their way through and reached demon king castle. Yumi went first and going to open the door , just in worst case there're ambush or trap lying so she planned to clear the way first.

That's when Alicia got her chance and stabbed Yumi with OP light javalin(iirc) in the back(which dropped from leveling arc) Yumi fell down.

the boys went "WTF DID YOU DO" while alicia try to convince them that Yumi is totally gonna turn evil sooner or later so I had to do what I must when I got a chance blah blah.

Demon king show up during their argument and laugh at how stupid humanity is , to fight among themselves before fighting him and attack them. The fight barely in their favour. They got destroyed hard by demon king. Protection amulet managed to save them from dying but demon king about to finish them off.

Then Yumi recovered before the worst come(or maybe the best ?) she fell down and didn't stand up right away because seeing light javalin stabbed through her heart shock her "a bit"

Level 99 Yumi overpowered the demon king. job done. Kingdom saved. Yippee!

The epiloge is , Yumi and patrick are talking about aftermatch. Alicia got locked up as punishment due to whatever crime she did. Can't rmb about the boys much but Iirc, their punishment aren't that harsh so they probably making trouble in Vol.2 again.
That all happened in volume 1? Huh???

NGL, not a fan of the OG LN, seems like the usual trope OG heroine is evil trope. Th manga is definitely more interesting if they keep Alicia personality, I was thinking of picking up the LN because I like the manga, but I guess there's no need to since they are basically different story.
I would encourage you to read it. Alicia and others don't appear much in later volumes. The story focuses on Yumi and Patrick interacting with the world. Prince is actually helpful when he appears again.

Funny.
After what seems like 4 revisions, they came to the conclusion that having the heroine be an asshole isn't a good idea.
I wish authors would just take that lesson to heart, and start from that premise to begin with. This isn't a Wuxia story where rage-bait is the premise.

From Artist's X (Twitter):
"The next update of the comic "Villain Lady Level 99" will be a turning point for Alicia and Yumiera! There are many reasons for the changes to Alicia, but one of them is for this scene... Please take a look~ "

THANK YOU MANGAKA FOR ACTUALLY CHANGING THE PLOTLINE

I already saw this might be possible development from how Alicia is reprotrayed here. Like she actually apologized for antagonizing Yudemilia, then her trying to understand her perspective, to her doing self-improvement.

Also, in this chapter Yudemilia think on how Alicia is as kind as she should makes me hope they're become friend in this version of story.

Just as the author themself said, they regret how they potray Alicia on WN and LN, since she is like one off villain that isn't important on the later arc, I'm glad if they approve of the new Alicia

Alicia genuinely complimented Yumiella's black hair despite how everyone around her immediately judged Yumiella for it🥺

I really love the manga adaptation of Alicia's character actually, it's kinda understandable that she's afraid of Yumiella because she can only see her as a black cloud (and it's easy to get swayed because of her annoyingly protective harem), but she immediately complimented Yumiella as soon as she's able to see her

Probably just a little dumb and indecisive, but otherwise a kind girl

I'm looking forward on how the manga progresses 👀

In regards to the anime, I have my own theory as to why that ending happens:

There is an Evil god trying to destroy everything and is likely the reason for the original Yumiella going full evil in the end. I think the anime is one universe when someone is reborn into Yumiella and the evil god overrides Alicia to force her into situations to push Yumiella into being broken, but this doesn't work, and then tries other tactics to breaking the reincarnate Yumiella in other timelines.
