@hedgemoney i would like to posit that there’s one more variable in play — the target demographic for the original publishing. If it’s originally aimed at the shounen/shoujo/young-adult market, that is to say from tweens to teens, young -bodied-MC x same-physical-aged romantic interest shouldn’t be too much a problem. Rather it would be quite weird at the least (if not outright disturbing depending on the implementation) to be introducing young readers to the concept of (physically) underage mc pursuing only mature partners as that would ironically make the relationship pedo all over again if it breaks the half-plus-seven rule. Might count as actual grooming from the publisher if that’s the story’s plot.
If the story is actually marketed towards the seinen/josei crowd then two way romantic feelings between the mentally older mc and the underaged romantic interest would likely be somewhat wrong or plain wrong depending on how badly it breaks the half-plus-seven rule and how viable the excuses the author makes are (best excuse i saw was the author spread out within the story’s that the mc’s new, physically younger body was overwriting their previous mindset causing their mind to regress, ie nature trumps nurture). Mc x mature person could arguably get a “pass” because we can intellectually figure out mc is an adult of sorts ( but personally i get weirded out by the cradle robbing love interest )
Honestly, We’re probably never going to have a concrete answer since this falls under nature vs nurture and goodness knows how long that debate’s gone unresolved. Personally, I think half of the isekais could’ve benefitted if they were simply written as platonic relationships.
Anyhoo have a happy new year!
