Kind of phoned in on this challenge if you really think Ana would betray Grace, if anything she would gladly forfeit the better reward. So even if she sees flame what do you think she'd do? Make Grace fail as well out of spite?

That was way too straightforward for a task that's supposed to be a challenge where you compete as a team in the first place. Should have been set up so one of them has to do something, and the other mustn't do anything, but they don't know what the other is doing, or something.

I'm confused, so they just need to either do nothing or put magic into their owns for them both to pass?
Do nothing: neither lamp lights: You both win!
Power the one in front of you to trip the other lamp to light, and the opponent does nothing: You Win++
See the one in front of you light up, and realise that a single caster (I think this is the part that was glossed over) has to power both to extinguish the pair - You can't see the other lamp without getting up from your seat: YOU LOSE
You stay in your seat and power yours so the other lights up in a standoff tactic: YOU BOTH LOSE!

So the trick is to tempt people to either betray the other for benefit or out of fear, or to trick them into panicking and getting out of their chair to try and see both lamps.

Yep: the key element is that regardless of the basic Prisoner's Dilemma setup, both participants see the lamp in front of them is lit. The psychological element is not the presented dilemma problem, but trying to decide if the 'betrayal' you can observe is actually true or not.

if the “star lamp” Grace sees is dark, Grace knows Anna will pass
if the “moon lamp” Anna sees is dark, Anna knows Grace will pass

both can pass together if both Grace and Anna are looking at a dark lamp

but, if Grace lights the “star lamp” and Anna doesn’t light the “moon lamp”, Grace will advance with bonus points

which is the same if Anna lights the “moon lamp” but Grace does’t light the “star lamp”, Anna will advance with bonus points

because of the proctor’s trick with the mirrors, it SEEMS to Grace that Anna betrayed her and wants the bonus points (but Grace knows its a sleight of hand)

because of the proctor’s trick with the mirrors, it SEEMS to Anna that Grace betrayed her and wants the bonus points (but she has blind faith in Grace)

but neither Grace nor Anna activated their lamps

The Prisoner's Dilemma doesn't work if you have to deal with the person afterwards. With no prison cooperation is best.

As set up it looks like a prisoner's dilemma but, as some have commented, with no incentive to betray. The twist is that the teacher then does the illussion to make it seem as if the other has betrayed you. At that point, it looks like you've lost, and the question is, do you retaliate or let the other pass? Or do you figure out there must be some trick involved (didn't feel magic from your partner)?

Heya,

Shouldn't it be, "lights" or "lit", instead of, "lits"?
Oof, another obvious miss... it's now fixed to 'lit', thank you for the report!

@TesutoLTSF Pretty sure the reference to the human heart is allegorical, not literal. As in the emotional center of the self, while the brain is the logical center of the self.
That’s how I interpret it as well, but reading it in the panel might make some readers wonder about the discrepancy. Thank you for your report and suggestion as well!

A minor error on page two; Amber-sensei says "And one is commoner." The letter "a" should probably be used before commoner, since indefinite articles like that help out with understanding for the reader or listener.
