I like how the chapters themselves also kinda flip between intense and soft, like this chapter here. We have Meari's internal narration of worry and stress over what Sayoko's planning, but then Sayoko just takes her out, treats her to stuff, has a nice little date on the roof, and backs off / respects Meari's wishes when she doesn't want to continue out in public.
AND Meari's clearly starting to develop some sort of feelings toward Sayoko, even if it's still not entirely conscious (and scent is the most linked sense to recollection, and is generally useful in establishing causal links on an emotional level with things in general because it often happens "underneath" the conscious mind).
Definitely stressful, but that also makes it great.
