it's not really an epidemic it's just the way japanese society is and how the '' perfect plan'' is , you get married to a proper person, not really the one you are madly in love but more the one with a stable job/who can take care of a house and cook and an ''okay'' personnality, you have kids, husband is too busy working hard for his family, wife is now a MOTHER before being a wife and even a women, and after , you start to stop seing your spouse as a love interest but more as '' a family member'' you still are loyal to them, but something is not the same anymore after all theses years of not caring and taking people's love for granted.

and that's how you get sexless mariage and people are cheating with coworkers ( because they spend so much time at work,and get drunk so many times together that this kind of relationship is bound to happend at some point )

It's partially related to the fact that the stories of 2 MCs are reaching their final chapter. We also already got a good number of chapters about Kaede, but barely anything about You - he is the most underdeveloped out of 4 core characters.

It really is such an unfortunate state of affairs that this is just Japan's default reality. And yeah something like this isn't unique to Japan; plenty of other countries with rules, regulations, and overall culture that just fosters these kinds or transactional and artificial unions. But a non-insignificant amount of Japanese pop culture and media portrays this, and in various lights and contexts no less.
