I get that preparing professional soundproofing equipment can be expensive, but is there any way one can improvise to make a soundproof 'room' that's somewhat comparable? Like take a bunch of cheap cardboard boxes, staple panels of some type of foam to them, arrange them around your office space, and boom. You just made a soundproof studio on a 500 - 1,000 dollar budget, or about 70,000 - 143,000 yen in Japan.

Huh. My impression of Japanese people is that they wanna go as proper as possible. More so if it support their work. Stereotype-y I know.

Or you just use the Cardbox Boxes in which Eggs are displayed in the Store.. these things are perfect for cheap Soundproofing until you get the Money for the proper thing.

It's the panels/foam/blankets that are expensive. They're heavy to ship and take up a lot of space relative to how much you need for notable sound proofing. Size is everything when shipping.

The best cheap substitute material I'd say would be a thick layer of moving blankets from U-Haul or something. They're close in material to what some proper acoustic stuff uses, but I'm not really sure how much it would help with the paper thin walls in Japan. You'd also need it to be air gapped from the wall to work best (every material change sound has to travel through helps the deadening).

Depending on how deep his voice is though you may just need something more proper to go from "barely audible" to "not audible". Do remember this is yelling in the middle of the night. There's a reason companies exist for this stuff. In wall or properly mounted on wall acoustic panels help a lot more than those shitty cheap Amazon panels that only barely help with reflections.

As Nitrouse has pointed out,the greatest soundproofing anyone actually needs for home use is the almighty egg cartons,specifically,though,the large capacity egg carton trays used for bulk storage.

They come in a few sizes,but the efficient ones to find in the waste of restaurants and super markets(whose staff would be more then happy to give to ya for free)are the 30 egg holders.

Combine that with foam-based double sided tape and use the entire room,VOILA!,sound proofed.

You can even put a second layer upside down(relative to the original placement you've had before)so that a thicker layer is formed with plenty of air pockets to further absorb and reflect sound.

And if ya feeling extra fancy,then hit it up with some paint.
