Microbial gangrene isn't naturally contagious. Sometimes it spreads by doing surgery on someone with gangrene and then not properly sterilizing the surgical instruments before reuse. It's not a bioweapon unless she tosses the dead body into the castle water supply, but any corpse would do for that.

Yeah I was expecting her to attempt that type of contamination as revenge, given the whole water well plot from a few chapters back.

I think there is more to it than just the commoner dying from the infection. I think that the knight knew well enough why he should leave and not finish the job and we are going to get the sweet but sad taste of revenge in the end.
