Man, I've read this manga without knowing any previous work from this autor so I wasn't expecting that twist in last few chapters.

This is the true translation. With the previous translation, people were waaaay too focused on the whole plague theory. I don't think the commoner nor the slave contracted the plague. He simply died from gangrene or head trauma when he got kicked. And the ending implies that the boundless energy that Slave-chan has and used to pursuing being a slave with will now be directed at getting vengeance against the kingdom that treated the commoner so poorly.

Oh, and Shorts man is probably the same guy that got hit by a hammer in Slave-chan's flashback. That's much clearer in this translation.

Yeah, it's one thing if his nihilism fits the theme of the story (like the Alien GF manga of his), but in this manga it feels like it comes out of nowhere. At the start I was wondering if he was trying to do something less divisive, but then it suddenly started taking a hard pivot.

Like, did anyone go through an arc here? Did anyone actually change? Were there any decisions that happened that mattered? That's the part that feels like a waste. These are neat characters. They barely did anything.

They had some nice buildup, funny tsukkomi routine and small hints at potential romance. But then it all just turned into one long journey of suffering with no meaningful resolution except for tragedy. Shame really.

Not that every story needs a three act structure, but I’m still confused on what this story is meant to convey.

Even if he’s just channeling his nihilism, I still don’t get the feeling he knew where he’s was going and just decided to end it at some point.
