Looking at how the lord issues a personal invitation to MC just to announce they're going to war, and how he did well in war, I'd say MC is probably a high-ranking adventurer or somebody like that. He also just bought a slave on a whim, and lives in a nice house. He's certainly not the most common of commoners.
