This is a reference to Dragon Quest 3. Starting as a Jester is a completely worthless class, but Jesters can class change to Sage without the Book of Enlightenment. So basically you either turn someone into a Jester for ... 20? levels of dead weight, or you start with a Jester and once you hit Dharma Shrine you swap them then.

Sages are both a Priest and a Wizard combined, only better. Not dissimilar to a Red Mage from Final Fantasy or a Bishop from Wizardry.
