There is a chapter showing her using some kind of powder to color her hair. I don't know whether or not that's a real thing, but it's water soluble and she need to reapply it after washing her hair.

once you dye hair it lasts for nearly 2 months, unless you're using one of those shampoo dyes, which fade after a few showers; or if you're just bleaching your hair, in which case it's permanent until the roots grow out.
