I took it as they both would've been killed had he not burned his mother. She had to make him do it in order to save him. That's why there was tears in her eyes when she told him to do it and why she held the torch and threw it with him, as support.
I guess it's how you interpret it. My first read through, I took it as she forced him to do it because she's a bitch that has control issues and likes to burn people. Maybe my reading comprehension is just fucked lol
