Considering the series started with plenty of death, it makes sense there will be more, especially since the number of survivors gives some leeway for the author to kill them in a meaningful manner, like this. It doesn't happen in every series, but I'd say it's a better decision to make it happen. It feels pretty Hollywood if everybody survives, after the initial shock, in an ultra violent world. Events like this really make characters grow.

If i don't rmmbr wrong (since i also read the raws too) there's a guy who did a spoiler dump here in one of the older chaps, you can relate to that post for answers
