Yeah the setup is a little too soon and too tidy. It’s not the hero, it could be the weedy sage guy. Why no one thought to look beyond the status screen to check Mc for a curse is pretty curious. And why his old party is so nasty to him is strange, too.

The hero didn't actively help him back in ch1 and the curse item belongs to him. I guess the hero see MC's potential rivals his. He cursed him and in case MC confront him, he blame MC for the stolen ring.

We got nothing to go on currently, it could be that all of them were in on the cursing for all we know.

@hokujin that's actually exactly what happened in the web novel. And since the curse was dispelled, it rebounded and afflicted Alan instead. Needless to say, shit hits the fan.

@daime17 the web novel didn't say why, but it was probably a lie to make it seem like he gave him something precious to signify their friendship. I doubt anyone would curse a ring that was really owned by their mother to hurt someone else.
