To the people who can't trust their police and government institutions:
I don't know where you live, but I pity you and your people. The police here may not be the best, but they do their best to uphold law and order as they can. While their methods may be debatable, they still followed SOP and did what was best at that time. I have had to deal with the police on 5 separate occasions:
1) When I was a minor and was involved in an illegal racing scene. They scolded me and took my name, but after they talked to my parents, they told them to keep better watch on me and simply wrote off my involvement in the scene.
2) When I was in the mountain climbing scene and we had to go to the police station to register our names in case anything happened to us on the mountains. The policemen were polite and made things easy for us despite us suddenly coming in like a wave.
3) When I was planning on going mountain climbing with a friend, we had to go to the police to register our names. The policeman in charge refused to let us climb because we were just two girls. He asked us to either bring along a trusted male friend along or go in a group next time. We didn't have a trusted male friend and we could only climb that weekend. So the police called a female police officer who was off-duty and asked if she'd be willing to accompany us. She agreed and we had a swell weekend.
4) When I was stalked back in college, I made a police report about it. The policemen investigated and managed to catch the stalker in action. I didn't want to press charges, so the policemen just kept him in lockup for one day and had him registered in case he did it again. The boy never stalked me again.
5) When in college, my laptop was stolen, so I made a police report. This is the only disappointing experience I've had with them, as they couldn't find any trail of my laptop and believed that it could've been an inside job (my own housemates).
I have never found any reason to distrust the police force. They are just normal people doing their jobs. Individual policemen may make mistakes, but the organization as a whole is not evil. I pity people who cannot trust their own police force to do the right thing.
