More like he didn't expect someone who would know illusion magic close to his level (Gotta keep in mind that douglas is probably the world's greatest magician, the ones strong enough to fool him with magic would probably be countable on one hand, and the bird is meant to deal with everything but magic on his level).

If there was a real problem, it's that the series never showed the bird actually be useful outside of telling him "she gone dude".
I will admit that it makes all the work he went through to get the bird feel pointless though.

In the webnovel, Alan was actually bedridden from how weak he had gotten. He was unrelated to the actual kidnapping.
Douglas onesidedly kicks the sage’s ass and BREAKS HIS ARMS until he releases Ravi.
The whole of the hero party has collapsed and lost fame from repeated failures, so none of them are “heroes” anymore except for Douglas, who is now “the strongest guardian”.
