Well, guess it's finally been added here. This is basically just a repeat of what I said on my profile, but I'm not really sure what to think about this ending. Like, it's obviously completely nonsensical, and I don't necessarily disagree with the people suggesting the possibility of this being a fake-out ending. The theory that the devil that attacked Denji at the end of 230 was the "dream devil" or "nightmare devil" and created all of this isn't too out there, either. Plus, the people saying "look, it says 'the end' so it's totally over stop saying it's fake!!" like they've never heard of lying before are just ridiculous. A fake-out ending is totally something Fujimoto'd do. This isn't some shitty Netflix series. (And in the first place, comparisons to Stranger Things are kind of silly? Like, these are stories written in two entirely different media with two entirely different target audiences.)
But at the same time... Dropping the series on a dime and rushing out a nonsensical ending with no plans for anything to come after it is also totally something he'd do.
If this were any other author, I think this would be a pretty clear cut case, one or the other. But Fujimoto? I seriously don't know; it could go either way. Part 2, especially, has been going in pretty hard on more experimental storylines, what with the mouth-less chapter with no dialogue and such. Could a fake-out ending be a natural progression of that? I don't think it's impossible. And with Chainsaw Man being as big as it is, I imagine that Fujimoto probably does have enough sway with the editing department to get them to play along.
The quality of the writing has generally been getting worse in part 2, as well, though, and in a lot of ways it does read as Fujimoto starting to get genuinely tired of writing this whole thing. So I could see him just going "yeah, I'm done, here's a shitty ending with a bajillion plot holes." I mentioned the possibility of this in my comment on the last chapter, too. (Though you kind of have to wonder if the editing department would actually go along with such an abrupt ending to one of their cash-cows.)
So, in the end... I don't really know. I still think I'm leaning towards this being the real ending, where Fujimoto just gave up writing it 'cause he was bored, but, like I said in my original post, I wouldn't be surprised if there really was another chapter, revealing this to be a fake ending. I just wouldn't really count on it.
If there were another chapter, though, I can't see it coming after anything more than a single week break. So if there's nothing next week or the week after that, I'm dropping the possibility. If it does still come after that point, then, yeah, I'll be pretty surprised. But I don't think that'd happen. Wait too long and you lose your audience, especially when you are literally telling them to leave. If this is intentional, then obviously Fujimoto's gotta keep stuff like that in mind.
