Crazy how anywhere I go, not a single person has tried dissecting this story. Like yeah it's not pinnacle of horror or anything but at least attempt to understand it before dismissing it as convoluted or edgy.
Yeah so from what I gathered (hopefully i didnt miss anything):
Kyoujou Yamada (eyebrow guy) was a kid at the orphanage several years ago where Sakurako's mom was still the caretaker. He stole crops from villagers and was a fucked up kid. Then Tooru (our mc who was abused by his mother and developed psychotic tendencies) comes along, befriends Sakurako, kills her mom and heavily injures Kyoujou's little sister Sachie. The orphanage disbands, everyone leaves, Kyojou comes back to the orphanage (ordered to hunt what he thought was a wild beast) and finds an abandoned Sakurako starved, unhygienic, and mentally broken.
Then takes his revenge by making HER the head teach, gets the geezers from the village to molest her thus causing her giant hatred for adults. Kyoujou and one Nishi guy condition them to do the yakuza's dirty work by sending abused kids into the orphanage and having them kill & clean up adults that the Yakuza wants disposed - earning him money in the process.
Kyoujou was also the one who invited Tooru back to the orphanage several years later in the present. Tooru has since suppressed his psychotic personality by copying his father's "normal-ness". Then the events of the manga happen while Tooru slowly reverts back to his original personality & regains his memories.
Yeah surprisingly not as dogshit as I'd thought it be.
The art is very clean and consistent, even has these nice moments like Sakurako's detailed design going inside the orphanage drawn like a children's doodle to represent her mental state.
Mirai sadge. Rinko was actually compelling wtf.
