I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding about nobility in those types manga where we deal with an heavily romanticized vision of nobility, laws don't apply to them and honor is the last of their worries as long as they stay in power, nobody will give a fuck if ...
The dukedom.
The dukedom will care.
EDIT: Ya'll are completely missing the point, that I was entirely hinging on the fact that the MC fought for a Duke's daughter, officially.
Going against the MC now, is to directly spit in the Duke's face, which can give immense political leeway in favor of the Duke.
It is not about "They are honor-bound to play nice", it's about not pissing off the highest form of authority in the entire kingdom other than the king.
P.S: Also, do not forget that this setting makes no sense if you're trying to apply actual history to it. That is to say -- in which world would peasants be receiving official education outside of a church, and on top of that -- together with nobility, not to mention, the royalty of the kingdom?
It reminds me a dumb ass story in which slaves were also allowed to study together with royalty. If the story goes so much off the rails, you cannot hark about how "that's not how that works in real life".
Yeah no shit it doesn't.
