This translation has me curious. Originally, Maki's grades were good at a bit below thirtieth in his grade and they improved dramatically after studying with Umi but oddly not enough to make the cut for the advanced class Umi was placed in, leading to the theory that, being on the bubble, Maki was deliberately left in the second-ranked class to be Yuu's support animal. If he's already at #12 here, that choice is gonna be much more difficult to explain, let alone defend.

Depends if that 12th-13th is class ranking or year ranking. Class ranking makes the more sense here; the rank difference might be small, but there might be enough of a gap in test scores to explain Maki bubbling out of 25-30 students. Although, assuming the other students in their current class doesn't slack off, they should be in 2-11 as well lol

Umi is moved into the highest-ranked class away from Maki (where she becomes something of a class mascot as well as creating a close friendship with the StuCo Prez) while Maki and Yuu are together in the second-ranked class, where she quickly develops an extremely unhealthy level of reliance on him (despite his pointed refusal to join her "officially" as co-class rep, he's more or less dragged into acting unofficially thanks to the actual rep ghosting). This reliance soon leads her to fully realize her feelings for Maki, feelings which don't take long to begin leaking out.
