I have a strong inclination Maki's father here isnt loyal. From Maki telling him you're a stranger now, you have your own family and new children to him starting to date a younger chick from his work near immediately after the divorce and him admitting he doesnt love Maki's mom anymore while she cant answer well and most likely still does harbor feelings...

His father barely tried to stop maki or anything when told to go away during their last interview. Dude was checked the fuck out emotionally from his family. He barely cared and did everything to distance himself.

Maybe he didnt shag the new girlbefore the divorce, but he certainly was seeing her more often than his wife and kid. Gonna be nigh impossible to redeem his character from what we've been given
Loyal ain't exactly the accurate way to put it, Dad just indecisive af.
He did care for Maki and still is, enough to the point where he love him more than his ex-wife and even Minato (see the later parts in the WN) but the fallout between him and his ex-wife and the turmoil of hooking up this early with Minato after his divorce very much weigh him down to be guilty.

family divorced when I was in in like uh 3-5th grade... I still remember their fights, yelling, them not being home, being out all the time... not coming home till past midnight, me worried as shit because they weren't home... Them not treating me like their actual child, besides just taking me places, paying for me, clean, etc... even now it is pretty similar but I have a better relationship with my dad (idk how I put that, in my head I said dad yet I typed mom, wtf)... so it hits home so badly for me... T-T

yeah i called him disloyal. Im guessing Minato is the new chick. If he feels guilty well... why do it? Dude deserves to be told off and have an angry Umi and Maki scolding him. It just sounds more like the divorce was his faultafter all

This is some projection going on here XDDDD....

The new girl is from the work so yeah I guess he was seeing more her, but they are clear they are quite professional and the girl only makes a move after he says he is going to get divorced.

Sorry for the spoiler but this is such a small topic on the grand scheme XDDDD
How is that projection?? Do you think its something I've done or experienced?

What I described is a very common scenario in real life. Even if the girl made the move first as soon as she learned of the divorce its still a scummy thing to do. Significant reason why Maki is handling it so poorly is presicely because his dad got a new woman so quickly.

From the child's point of view itis akin to being slapped across the face and told you arent worth their love.

As I said, Dad is indecisive AF, so much so that Minato wants Maki to be with him to the point she’ll sacrifice her relationship and cut ties with him just to make him happy again as she know his love for his son is much greater but knowing Maki wants to conclude it in his own way. TLDR: Man’s a mess, it’s definitely his fault for the most part

You are projecting your views on the story more than what the story has shown you, thats why "projecting"... I mean sure could be a personal experience or something, but I didnt went this far.

what I mostly pointed is that there is no sign of cheating, but yeah Dad already moving on and mom probably sting stuck on the dad is affecting Maki a bit for sure.

In fact, she only makes her move after accidentally seeing some HR paperwork regarding his divorce. He didn't even tell her, let alone make a move on her. He's no saint, spending way too much time at work prior to the divorce even given the broken Japanese cultural norms at play here, but he's no more a player than his own son.

I know, I read the novel. I was just trying to be as vague as possible to a non-novel reader XD...

Saying you hate carrots is not being a bad boy, unless expressing your preference is not allowed.

If anything I just wish they had told me sooner instead of pretending to be a married couple for years to "preserve" the family.
For me they did just that, and therefore didn't create that suffocating not-quite-family feeling. Instead, I got a weekend dad, and they got along well enough for us to have full family holidays and birthdays. So yeah, you're absolutely right. Sometimes it's better to end it before it gets worse.

Poor Maki, hopefully Umi will cheer him up in the next part pf this chapter
I'm not sure he needs so much cheering up as just collecting his thoughts. But her being there will help.

You should say im reading too much into it or seeing something that isnt there. When people say "you are projecting" it means to accuse someone of something you are feeling and/or doing.

I agree there is no overt evidence of cheating, but what we've been shown and novel readers said about his behaviour is also something common cheaters do.

Regardless of how much behaviour he happens to share ,or not, with people that are cheating. What he did is still incredibly scummy and caused serious suffering to his son.

I mean I kinda get it to a certain extent... but its not such a unique story, father trying to provide overworking, but when he realizes he pushed away his family.... especially in japan that the work schedule is borderline slavery work... welp...

I'm probably the only one who gets annoyed at this type of family drama lol
Maybe because I'm an asshole who was basically unfazed by my parents' divorce (also when I was in highschool)
