It's not like it's a contest to see who had a worse time during a war. Fact is, the "horrors of war" were visited upon people from both/all sides of most conflicts.

@vexelpops I agree with you. Unfortunately, I think there's not much coverage about this topic in form of pop culture like manga from other countries. I think it's great for other asian countries to tell their stories. The Japanese think they're the victim of the war, in the other hand, they never write the story about their conquest of eastern asian countries.

It’s a warning to consider what it means to go to war. Those of us who live in nations that have been at war almost all our lives must consider it, too.

Man, it's amazing how people try to ignore the suffering of others by comparing it to the suffering of others. Let the Chinese mourn Nanking, and let the Japanese mourn their losses. Heck, even for the sins of the Japanese Empire, it's nothing new under the sun, for all lands have played the game of conquest and brought suffering upon their own and others.

I love a good coming of age story with a sad perspective on misplaced nationalism and the horrors of war. (I say misplaced, because these girls love their country and are doing nothing wrong helping nurse the injured and cursing American bombers, which is a healthy nationalism, unlike the war in China.)

@Boomthorkell - Japanese weren't mourning the losses of Okinawans because they simply never cared. Okinawa was essentially the shield for Japan. More Okinawans could have died for all that Japan cared about them, at the time. We can see this in current politics, too.

And @VexelPops and @esega - China and Korea, among MANY other countries suffered horribly in ways that make me so bitter and angry and as someone whose people suffered at the hands of Japanese Imperialism, I am in agreement about Japanese but in this situations, these are not Japanese people. These are Okinawans. And Okinawans aren't Japanese, the pain Okinawans suffered was at the hands of Japanese soldiers and people and many Okinawans speak to Japanese Imperialism.

@silvermonarch

It seems these girls are quite likely Japanese settlers in Okinawa, rather than Okinawans (as in the native Ryokun type peoples). Also,by this point in time, most Okinawans were assimilated. I also wouldn't speak for all 120 million Japanese. Through, like most countries (including Vietnam and China), they sure don't respect or care that much about hill people or non-majorities.

I was referring to these girls sufferings in particular, and the suffering of the Japanese civilians anywhere who suffered under bombings. (Like the Tokyo and Kyoto firebombings, for example.)

I'm sure the Author selected Okinawa for a variety of reasons, one being it was a military target with Japanese and US forces present.

Look, Imperialism sucks the world round. Civilians pay the price of their nations choices. In fairness to the Japanese, they didn't do anything the Europeans, or any Empire historically, didn't do. Fuck, even North Vietnam conquered Champa 300 years ago and said "we're going to civilians these un-han barbarians."

Meh, independently of the actual events that happened, this manga really isn't my cup of tea, mainly because there isn't much sense of continuity between each chapter. The characters are pretty one-dimensional, and most of the sad scenes feel cheap. While it might be an accurate depiction, it isn't making me cry so I'm not satisfied at all.

In the end, it isn't really engaging, nor does it really induce any strong emotion.

This looks like it would scanlated by LSD, but I suppose the war content would eliminate it from that idea (maybe).

@vexelpops Is this a contest to see who had it worse because of war? Why don't people just understand that war is terrible to both side? War is something that shouldn't exist. The current generation of Japan is not as fault so why dwell so much on the past? The people that committed those atrocities are dead. The most important thing is prevent such terrible things from happening again and I am saying this as a citizen of a country that was a victim of Japanese Imperialism in WWII with thousands of our people and children died.
The ones at fault were the leaders of Japan, the Japanese civilians were victims, the same as other countries. The soldiers were forcefully drag to a war started by Japan nobles, their families including children were killed by bombing and suffered from malnourishment.
How do you know there is no work on other countries' perspective? Do you know Chinese or other languages? Did you read any manhua? Manga are written by Japanese so of course they will be about their perspective. If you want other other countries' perspective, read works from other countries.

@miyako19 to be fair japan has a pretty terrible history of even acknowledging what they did in the war. I'm not saying we can't forgive and move on but at the same time if you compare their efforts to say Germany's it's pretty pathetic. The government in cases has straight up lied about their involvement in terrible war crime. So I can understand why people are suspicious about the way Japanese media portrays japans role.

i dunno man, between the holocaust and nuclear bombing they come to a close, of course, if your country was responsible for either of them i get why you try to downplay those horrible things.
