There's a general rule in writing that you shouldn't try to write a character that knows more about the subject matter than you do. Because it's impossible, right? You as the writer are limited by your own knowledge. So the author really fucked up by making one of the characters a lawyer; a lawyer in this situation could easily crank out a few thousand years of sentence with nothing but a pen and paper.
