Its been a while, but I vaguely remember it was Ankei's drunk father who was beating/strangling him. Ankei's master who was a traveling monk at the time took him in, if he hadn't Ankei would have most likely been killed by his own father.

Seeing his master as his new paternal father figure and what he aspired to be, Ankei can't ever fathom the thought of his master going astray.
