I don't remember seeing guns/cannons so maybe they haven't discovered gunpowder, and magic is "utilitarian" so nobody thought of making them I suppose

True, but also somebody gotta figure out the right way to cast it, share the knowledge and one with aptitude must learn it to use it. Skipping the physical and chemical stuff is still a huge advantage but magic also comes with challenges.
