Who said anything about virginity? Are you the kind of person who would just watch your partner get raped? Getting killed just means being dead right away, while being raped can cause long-term psychological trauma and emotional distress. Like worried about getting pregnant or not pure anymore(yeah not just the guys, but also some girls actually care about that)

The series has always strongly implied that's not the curse since both of them acknowledge off the bat that they can't even ask the other if they think it's that without revealing that they are in love. The more likely curse has always been that they lose control of themselves when they're in love.

Their entire dynamic is heavily reliant on their sense of camaraderie and trust. Get rid of the memories of one permanently and it’s almost as bad as what Miura did to Casca. One person left grieving with unreciprocated memories, it seems too cruel for this story. But if we’re close enough to the conclusion, maybe returning memories is what they wish from the Goddess as their victory prize.
