The current state of things could be the result of the authors response to criticism. Before, the mcs role was almost non existent and he was kinda passive.

Right now the focus is solely on the mc and oh boy is he moving things forward. It is fun to watch but the whole aimless mayhem will surely get boring if he remains this way.

Im also not entirely sure what caused the mc to go mad. It does feel like a part of the story is missing.

He got mad because he feels like shit, he literally said that himself. You might think that this is too shallow of a reason but that's what it intended to from the beginning. the MC is gone crazy, and a crazy man don't need any deep and meaningful reason to do things.
