So I image this has to be much more significant than just that. I'm guessing the boy sees something bad, the evildoers try to dispose of him, and Victoria makes a deal, perhaps with a god, to "save" him. The boy is memory-wiped so as to preserve plot continuity while the girl is rehabilitated by having her start of darkness be because of love (of a stranger at that). If the author wants to go even further, the love interest is found to be dead or, more in line with the series, mind broken. Thus clearing the way for Victoria.
