Definitely knows they aren't alive and are just an illusion. But he's still human, he wants to bask in this dream for a little bit before he moves on. It doesn't matter to him that they're all there ready to kill him, they can't actually touch him, so it's like they did him a favor.

There's just 2 issues I have with the scene. Going without food or water for a few days would result in a person becoming very weak, potentially on the verge of death even. But it wouldn't be 'visible' as emaciation, where he's lost a lot of weight. The lack of water would kill you weeks before you'd be able to lose that much fat and muscle, and that loss can't happen in just 3 days.

But I guess the magic might be draining him too. So alright, I could accept that.

Another issue is that they believe he would fall for this trick at all. That just seems silly. Someone who is in a state of mental disarray, like serious depression or PTSD, sure. People can get into delusional or fugue states where they easily take to suggestion or have daydreams. But they had no reason to believe he was in such a state. A normal healthy human wouldn't just fall into delusion, even if it was based on some extremely painful memories.

Again, magic could be at play beyond just generating the illusion. But if its just a straight up illusion, it's really stupid. Like never mind just thinking he might fall for it, they'd have to be absolutely certain he would. What was their backup plan if he didn't?
