Unfortunately, giant spiders are impossible due to square cube laws. They wouldn't have the strength to move, or even support their own weight. And even a small drop would cause them to, uh, splash.

Of course, if it were something that just resembled a spider, that could be different. But then you'd expect a lot of differences in how they look and act.

As far as the needed alterations, you need a stronger and stiffer replacement for chitin, and some alterations to the lungs as they breath passively. Unlike insects that tend to have more complex, yet still typically passive breathing systems, spiders do have oxygenated blood.

Personally I would think that a spider with something tougher than chitin and a muscle added to their book lungs, with some other small changes to the lungs, would still be a spider. Honestly the changes for them to lay eggs like this and then have the males come by and fertilize them are more significant changes.
