I wasn't talking about age of consent (which, in my country, is just for having sex), I was talking about legal age, when society consider you a full fledged adult that can makes his own choices without the need for parents/guardians approval, which in Japan is 20 (I don't know if there's another way to address it in english since it's not my first language, but my dictionary translate it so). And yes, they could get married when she's 16 with their parents approval but it'd still be troublesome since she's his (ex) student, so it's perfectly reasonable for him to wait for her to be 20. Could he have avoided it legally?Sure. Was it stupid for him not to?I don't think so.

@Wuiff like it or not, it's the law. He could not have waited with her parents approval, but that would have probably created a lot of scandals/problems so why risk it? I mean, even her parents that are totally on board the ship are literally saying why he's acting that way and that's the right thing to do and even she understands it. It's hard, it's painful, but it's the right thing to do. Even now he'll probably be seen as the "teacher that got with his (ex) student" and suspected of having a reationship with her when she was still in school, but at least he can be confident of having done the things the right way.
