The thing about replacing the chain of an external gearing bicycle is the risk of the new chain being incompatible with the old sprockets of the cassette, especially the smallest ones. After all, the chain wears out in sync with the sprockets. So, if you only change the chain, the chain may start slipping. But then again, who knows how old that bike really is and how much the gal has been biking. It could be she just has taken poor care of it, no cleaning and lubrication, so the sprockets might still be okay even if the chain is a rusty goner.

If only it was sprocket science instead, the MC might have a chance.
