He's really not as someone who as tried and failed to learn both alphabets its not as simple as you make it out to be. Kanji or to the Chinese known as Hanzi it has literally thousands of characters in the system even full on language experts struggle to ID of all them. He's not dumb for choosing to not make assumptions on a subject he has very little expertise of. In his eyes like it could be those types of characters but playing it safe and doing more research.

Agreed. If you're sure it's either latin alphabet or kanji, then yes, it's kanji. If you have no reason to assume that, or that it's even Earth characters, then it could be anything.
