Fun fact in real life, but as late as the early 2000's, the Japanese government is trying to systematically eliminate the Ainu people and culture so they can make them ethnically homogeneous with Japan as possible. Although they did pass a resolution to try and "end" discrimination they are the most discriminated race in Japan, just like the rest of the world, where, no matter the country, the indigenous people face the most discrimination.

Is the anime loyal to the source material? Should I watch the anime or read the manga?

@lionfromnorth It is mostly loyal, but skips over a lot of arcs. I say no harm in enjoying both. The anime has literally perfect voice acting and its great to hear, and additionally it's nice to see some of these scenes animated (especially the plot climaxes), but it had to skip a lot of scenes in order to reach pivotal plot points in time for the season 2 finale. A lot of missed arcs were revisited in OVAs, so you can check those out too (the Anehata one literally came out today, but I haven't seen it uploaded yet)!

Basically, I would read the manga first and then enjoy the anime if you want to. The manga is 100% definitely the better, more full Golden Kamuy experience. The anime is also fine - but it's more supplementary to me.

I have to say that the fight over whether or not the smut tag should be included for this manga is just as gripping as the story itself. Noda's appreciation of the male form is enthusiastic to say the least. On the one hand, Golden Kamuy has nothing in common with most other works in the smut tag and I'm worried that new readers could easily get the wrong idea. On the other hand, I think one could very fairly classify some of the light-hearted scenes as softcore pornography.

To new readers: there are some very nsfw light-hearted (and sometimes erotic) scenes limited to the adult male characters that become more frequent in the latter half of the series. There are a few incidental instances of adult female nudity, most of them non-sexual.

Yeah, I’ll be honest. The smut tag doesn’t really apply to this manga. Sure, there is a lot of eroticism and explicit visuals, but the sexual themes mostly play off as gags and feel really playful and natural. This is mostly because Noda Satoru first and foremost emphasizes characterization and relatability. While there is a lot of objectifying of sexual attraction and physical touch, Noda reminds us that these people are human, and that sexuality and fetishism is only a small sliver of human nature. Also, the historical setting and universal acceptance by the characters of these themes really normalizes it (at least, in my opinion) to the point where the reader isn’t as fixated on these behaviors.

One problem is that the "smut" tag on MangaDex doesn't actually mean "smut". It's been officially appropriated to mean something else entirely. Because... reasons. (Namely, the lack of any truly appropriate tag for "characters in this have sex"; where on similar-tag-bearing sites one might flag things something like "mature". "Smut" was chosen to be the sacrificial proxy tag.)

Why has it been handled this way? I don't know. It is rather somewhat confounding, but, y'know, differing opinions and all that, I suppose. Supposedly it is scheduled to be addressed in a future tag overhaul.
