I'm going to be blunt, its really scummy to bring up real life trauma when talking about the merit's of trauma as a narrative device, and especially with its specific application in a particular story. You're basically making it so that anyone who wants to argue against your point has to delicately avoid doing so in a way that could be perceived as dismissing or insulting a real person's actual problems, something which people with even a basic degree of empathy usually won't even bother with, because most people aren't eloquent enough to avoid it.It actually does. Maybe you're used to the fantasy portrayal of trauma, but in reality you may never know someone has a trauma until their trauma response triggers. In Kurose's case, playing the guitar and having fun with friends wasn't the issue, so he'd have no trauma reaction. Then suddenly "We're glad to have you as our guitarist" triggered his "There's expectations placed on me and I'll fail them and be blamed like last time" trauma and boom, trauma response "from nowhere".
I've seen a very similar situation in real life with my wife. She had a bad, late-term, miscarriage that almost killed her, and after a few years she was mostly fine (still some physical issues caused by the whole thing, seemed fine mentally) and I sliced my finger while cooking, if it hadn't caught on my fingernail I might have taken the tip off. Blood everywhere. And she went into shock, hyperventilating, pale face, tears pouring non-stop, and was basically unresponsive to me. So I had to wrap my finger up, and then sit her down to get her breathing regularly. Literally went from "I've had no trauma reactions in over 12 months" to "full blown panic attack" in a matter of seconds.
Just going to toss in my two cents and say I don't mind the jarring tonal shift there.
The tonal shift isn't the issue. It's the horrid writing and pacing. It makes his character justifiably unlikable because there's no nuanced exploration of heavier themes here.Personally, I don't mind to see how it plays out, because otherwise if it's a PURE fluff manga, I see it having a shelf-life.
This as fuck, wish I could spam the 💡emoji on y'all's comments. I'm so glad you other dumb fucks never experienced or know any who has experienced panic/trauma attacks, BUT THIS IS LITERALLY HOW IT GOES! YES, WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING TO SUSPECT IT, HE WASN'T ANTICIPATING IT EITHER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IT IS IRL!!!You don't need to hint at trauma. Most people you meet you'd never know they had trauma until something happened to trigger it. Which is why I said it was a good representation for the medium.
Also, it doesn't need to have a psychological tag if this is just the main conflict of the arc. It's something he has to overcome, and the process will help him grow. Which is why I said let's see how they handle it
