Yeah...this was an unearned pivot. It could be the most excellently insightful piece on the lasting effects of trauma but the jarring transition really puts it off. The author hasn't shown much success in storytelling outside of the fluffy comfort zone, either.

Still gonna read for the extra saccharine dismount, regardless :lul:

It actually does. Maybe you're used to the fantasy portrayal of trauma, but in reality you may never know someone has a trauma until their trauma response triggers. In Kurose's case, playing the guitar and having fun with friends wasn't the issue, so he'd have no trauma reaction. Then suddenly "We're glad to have you as our guitarist" triggered his "There's expectations placed on me and I'll fail them and be blamed like last time" trauma and boom, trauma response "from nowhere".

I've seen a very similar situation in real life with my wife. She had a bad, late-term, miscarriage that almost killed her, and after a few years she was mostly fine (still some physical issues caused by the whole thing, seemed fine mentally) and I sliced my finger while cooking, if it hadn't caught on my fingernail I might have taken the tip off. Blood everywhere. And she went into shock, hyperventilating, pale face, tears pouring non-stop, and was basically unresponsive to me. So I had to wrap my finger up, and then sit her down to get her breathing regularly. Literally went from "I've had no trauma reactions in over 12 months" to "full blown panic attack" in a matter of seconds.
I'm going to be blunt, its really scummy to bring up real life trauma when talking about the merit's of trauma as a narrative device, and especially with its specific application in a particular story. You're basically making it so that anyone who wants to argue against your point has to delicately avoid doing so in a way that could be perceived as dismissing or insulting a real person's actual problems, something which people with even a basic degree of empathy usually won't even bother with, because most people aren't eloquent enough to avoid it.

This is something a lot of people like to do on this site and frankly its annoying and you should stop doing it. This is a rushed and sudden introduction of unestablished trauma purely to inject some drama into what would otherwise be a straightforward "School Festival Band Arc", and people are allowed to be annoyed at that without somebody trying to shame them about it.

Just going to toss in my two cents and say I don't mind the jarring tonal shift there. I've seen trigger-based trauma like this before too, and not all trauma exhibits itself in the same way. Sometimes it's anxious avoidance, sometimes it's fine until the specific trigger occurs, etc. I don't mind if he was ok to try out enjoying the instruments again, and the statements placing reliance on him triggered him.

I don't think having no build up is bad writing, but it will have to be justified with what comes after. I think it's completely reasonable to have the situation started this way, as long as it's followed through with well. I also don't mind if a 'fluff' manga actually dares to dive into some heavy topics if it's going to sufficiently flesh out their characters through growth.

I'm also fine with people not liking the tonal shift, but I don't think it's inherently bad, it's just going to be divisive because it won't be what everyone is looking for out of the manga. Personally, I don't mind to see how it plays out, because otherwise if it's a PURE fluff manga, I see it having a shelf-life.

The tonal shift isn't the issue. It's the horrid writing and pacing. It makes his character justifiably unlikable because there's no nuanced exploration of heavier themes here.

This is the same author that wrote an entire arc about someone trying to make a friend by forcing them to work her part-time job.

Pg 7 I am not surprised that band kids exiled her over a minor disagreement lmao. I got banned for a year from a band discord bc I expressed a normal human response to a celebrity death 🤣

You don't need to hint at trauma. Most people you meet you'd never know they had trauma until something happened to trigger it. Which is why I said it was a good representation for the medium.

Also, it doesn't need to have a psychological tag if this is just the main conflict of the arc. It's something he has to overcome, and the process will help him grow. Which is why I said let's see how they handle it
This as fuck, wish I could spam the 💡emoji on y'all's comments. I'm so glad you other dumb fucks never experienced or know any who has experienced panic/trauma attacks, BUT THIS IS LITERALLY HOW IT GOES! YES, WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING TO SUSPECT IT, HE WASN'T ANTICIPATING IT EITHER BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IT IS IRL!!!

You're conflating my real-life example of "trauma doesn't require foreshadowing" as me using my real-life example to win an argument. There's no argument to win, I'm not trying to change anyone's mind about whether this was a good narrative decision or not. If you dislike the way it was handled, that's entirely fine. It's a subjective experience after all. Personally, I really liked it and it gave me chills.

I was simply pushing back against the notion that "trauma must be foreshadowed to be effective." This manga is a great, and fairly realistic example of how someone's trauma may suddenly and visciously affect them with no build-up or explanation. I was obviously aware of my wife's trauma, so I knew where it came from. But what if she was at work? If a coworker knew nothing of her past experience (she doesn't talk about it for obvious reasons) and had an injury that caused a lot of blood and my wife had a trauma response. It would genuinely appear to come out of nowhere, and no one would say "Gosh, you could have given us a heads up..."

Yet another case of the author getting bored and shoving whatever idea came into his head in the moment, pacing or foreshadowing be damned, to all the people trying to justify it by saying that real trauma can jump out at you like that, this isn't real life, this is a story and this is poor storytelling, it's not a psychological manga either, it's a slice of life romance.

That was really rushed. Feels like the axe is coming. People just don't do expo dumps about their past like that, introducing an unknown past trauma, and the speed that we went through everything.

I doubt that this is indicative of a potential axe. This series sold something like 400k copies, so it's doing extremely well, and I think it's safe from the axe for the time being. This is just (forced and rehashed) drama.
