I guess it would make sense for Kumi not wanting to get through something like that again with her partner. But I think is a little late in the game for Ippo going after anyone else. Maybe that actually inspires Ippo to get better at boxing so he doesn't get hurt. Which shoo be totally doable considering his knockout power.

I didn't expect the route to be "This relationship is completely unsustainable, so after you get over our massive breakup you will start boxing again" didn't expect that route
The manga's been hammering the whole "you can't get to the world champ level unless you're a monster willing to put it above everything else" over and over as a literal line Ippo has to cross. A breakup pretty much frees Ippo completely.

It'll likely be temporary though, Kumi's been in the manga too long for George to not commit. Mashiba will likely patch things up.

That is what I'm hoping too. Mashiba already admitted, at least to himself, that Ippo is worthy. And as a boxer I hope he can give an insight into just what does it mean to be with someone that has a passion.

Something like this happened in Rocky. At the end it was Adrian herself who told Rocky that she fell in love with the fighter too, and not just the sweet man that he was.
