There. The chapter fucking answers all your "oh she's a terrible freeloader taking advantage of him" accusations. I'd ask if the orcs were happy now, but they're orcs, and they can't be.

I wonder what the implication is for him feeling like taking money makes it feel lonely, or less chummy. Is he hoping for more?

Because making a friend of yours pay to stay at your house makes you feel like they're not your friend. You're not doing them a solid because that's what friends do, you're making them pay you. Refusing to let them pay rent is your way of saying "no man, we're cool, this is what we do when we're cool with each other." He very clearly wants to reconnect with her, and was lonely in his house all by himself. He wants them to stay and wants them to think he's being generous and hospitable.

Are they really friends if she ghosted him for 17 years?

sometimes i really worry about what we have become as a society his ex came to him after 17 years and asked for help and people complain like you don't know what it's like to do good deeds because one day it might be luck for you just imagine after a while he gets married and they have a happy family, kitchen is full smell of oyakodon and they are lying nicely in bed after a night of pure romance then he wakes up to someone gently whispering in his ear "Darling i know it was tiring last night but it's time to work!" then his childhood friend comes in and tells her daughter and him wake up you two or the oyakodon won't taste good

It's not that deep and there's a big difference between fictional story and real life

We don't have info on how the relationship ended, we just know they broke up and they didn't keep contact after it, saying that someone ghosted the other is just speculation
You can't be "friends" with someone who you've last seen in high school 17 years ago. Not on the level on letting her stay indefinitely with her daughter who's being pretty rude about it all the time, for practically free, while she gets like "I'm totally looking for another place, teehee, maybe one day I'll find it". In real life it would be big red flag of a situation, but since it's manga, it's like pairing MC with violent abusive tsundere - it's all cool because she's actually into him and they'll get together in the end anyway.

MC is damn useless doormat with oneitis, not a good friend. She isn't abusive or manipulating him, but she's totally pushing well over proper limits while ignoring how much she relies on him and owes him right now. Even her daughter seems more level-headed despite being an annoying tsundere kid.

I see what you did there.

yeah, she appearing out of nowhere after 17 years to crash at his place is pushing boundaries way beyond what any reasonable person would, but that is it, some people in the comments act like the mom is some sort of master manipulator that dumped MC 17 years ago then turned back when she needs him, but there is no info to how things ended between the 2, i get if people don't like her since she is an annoying stereotype, but they should at least dislike her for things that we actually know she did.

Agreed, I think the part where it's typical manga trope "she's hot and clearly MC's love interest so she gets away with being annoying/useless/etc" and valid criticism contains a kernel of truth that turned into "mountain out of molehill" by the people attacking her in earlier threads, especially since many folks on MD are prone to blowing their gaskets at anything even resembling NTR or Rent-a-Girlfriend style simping, and she's got her own kid with her.

It's clearly "old friends get together after years" + "found family" kind of manga, slow burn romance and slice-of-life, but since it has typical annoying manga tropes in its writing (especially with to MC being doormat while she gets to be cute-useless airhead type) and it's a "old crush with her kid" scenario that weirdly triggers many people, comments often turn into shitshow.
