I think the irrational fear of flying on a proven-to-be-much-safer-than-most-forms-of-human-transportation
has less to do with the odds of getting into an accident (many more car accidents than plane-related ones, both in absolute numbers and percentage-wise)
and more to do with the odds of surviving an accident (much, much lower survival rate among plane-related ones, you know, falling out of the goddamn sky and everything).

@justforthelulz The dude was even wondering if the airplane can really fly and wouldn't it simply drop out of the sky, incapable of flying. That's why I called it intellectually afraid of flying, not irrationally. Irrational fear of flying (aerophobia) ought to be related to acrophobia and such; something a person can't even really explain but will suffer all the more because of it. However, I suppose your explanation might be exactly one strong reason for the MMC's fear, even if it isn't irrational at all.
