Wow, what a disappointing ending. I'm surprised he did the common mistake of having a huge dramatic battle arc that sucks up all the oxygen and takes up all the time and pages in the final stretch.
That also makes it impossible to have enough time to resolve all the loose plot threads and ensure that people have their relationships portrayed in a meaningful and fun way. Plus, all the developments that were shown were nonsensical and just felt random.
And arguably the worst girl "won" it seems. Hinagiku should've been the one, and it was insulting enough when the site story with Ruka was there to attempt to knock Hinagiku off. I wish the author had never started Ad Astra while he was still doing Hayate.
Ad Astra sucks, and it probably took time and energy away from this series, which the author could not afford. The "drama" and the battles were the worst aspects of Hayate, and the ingenious humor were the best parts, but he doubled down on the wrong aspects at the end and finished on a weak note in a stupid way.
I still enjoyed most of Hayate no Gotoku, but just like with Gintama and many other manga, I hate to see a good humorous manga throw away its strengths to double down on its weaknesses to try and be "dramatic" at the end, and for Hayate to choose the wrong / worst girl on top of that, even though Nagi's ending was supposed to be about her growing up, that was just dumb. So was Maria cutting all ties instead of just saying goodbye in a normal way and being one phone call away, etc.
It's all just so contrived and dumb it's almost pitch meeting worthy. It's one giant facepalm. Plus there's the fact that Nagi probably should've had enough assets to still be comfortable through stuff like real estate and investments to where she wouldn't have to live as modestly as she did at the end. But I've ranted on enough, so I'll just stop by saying that the ending sucked.
