It’s because this is a novel adaptation.

Most Manga wouldn’t do this in fear of sales/readership fall off. Rather instead turn popular side characters into spinoffs.

The “Nito” manga adaptation has the same complaints right now too.(almost a year now without MC? Though that’s also partly because of a horrible slow Manga release cycle)

I started reading the story because there was an Elf on every cover that had nothing to do with the synopsis and I wanted to know why she was there all the time.
So from the start the MC's story was not what interested me lol
