@princeofcups Age of consent in most countries (including the USA and throughout Europe) is ~16. The meme that <18 is underage is just a bullshit internet lie. 16 isn't pedophilia at all, not legally and not morally.

@Pauan different cultures view it differently. I have a few great aunts who were married at 15 and 1 at 13 and 12, but that only existed out on the farm. They were beaten by their husbands and some just ran off with all the money after selling most of the harvest. I doubt anyone would believe this story, but during the time of Canada wasn't a country to being a country and when they brought over immigrants from eastern Europe was kinda terrifying as these new farming communities that started up were basically lawless due to communication limitations (People also keep quiet and "deal" with their own) and population density per square km was like 0.0001 for the area. Women were not allowed anything and the church was basically in charge and the RCMP or w.e when they'd actually get called, though lynching was a thing... My great aunt was married at the age of 12 was forced to start having kids at 12, she was beaten by almost all her husbands, she'd have to work up until labor and wouldn't get much down time after having the kid (maybe a couple hours, depending if it was harvest o r not), she had 12or 13 kids, but there might have been a couple more because plenty of kids died o u t of the farm. She had 5 husbands and all 4 left the same way by going to work somewhere else. Each new husband didn't want to look after the last mans kids so they'd end up in the orphanage, or if she was single for too long the kids would end up in the orphanage anyways. It was her last husband who was the only good man. Instead of having his own kids with my great aunt he took in all of her kids from past marriages. Never got to meet her, but my mom says she always tried her hardest and managed to stay happy.
We look down on marriage below the age of 18 because you do not finish high school until the age of 18 and completing high school is something we view as a requirement of becoming an adult. You're not legally an adult until the age of 18 anyways and your parents have legal authority over you unless you get emancipated from them or whoever your legal guardian(s) are. Besides there ain't much reason to get married for everyone. I think the girls who want to marry before they are an adult have some odd fantasy view of marriage.

@Liquidxlax Nobody mentioned marriage (sex before marriage is quite common). And people do often have sex with their classmates while in school, so graduating has nothing to do with it either. In fact, in the Netherlands it's considered a problem if highschoolers *aren't* having sex, since the Dutch view sex as a normal part of life, not some weird taboo.
Also, you can get a job before you're 18, and you can get a car before you're 18. (And meanwhile you can't drink until you're 21, the laws are complex, 18 doesn't automatically mean "adult").
The reason for people thinking that <18 = pedophile is just because of misinformation on the internet. Regardless of whether you (or anybody else) think it's appropriate or not is irrelevant, liking a 16 year old or having sex with them does not make you a pedophile.
Of course if you happen to be in the rare places where the age of consent is 18, then yeah you shouldn't have sex with 16 year olds. But the vast majority of the world isn't like that (and Japan in particular isn't like that), so you shouldn't project your views or customs onto others.

@Pauan I mention m arriage because religion was so hardcore that these men used marriage as a way to fulfill their pedo desires. Why would a late 20s man have interest in a 12 year old. They don't have anything in common and have no reason to be in a relationship. The sex thing is fine so long as its those who are close in age. Lots of creeps prey on school girls. The thing about the Netherlands made me laugh because you may say its weird, but I still have a hard time believing even 50% of highschool students are actively having sex or are non-virgins. Highschool was a lot of talk and no action for a lot, but that was a little over 10 years ago. Not sure how things are now and Canada is different, but very few girls were having sex, blowjobs was generally something at least 50% of us got (I remember health class being a bit of a scare tactic, saying it hurts the girl a lot the first time and some other bull shit. Saying it hurts a lot may make girls less likely to give up their virginity unless they really liked the guy. We seem to be ahead of the states by a bit and far behind many European countries. I know it ain't pedophilia, but when I've explained that the attraction to teenage girls is hebephilia or w.e its called. Then I hear things like, that word was only made so you sickos can try to get away from the term pedophilia, using a different word doesn't make it right.
