Seeing as he's worried about his "true identity" being found out, he's some sort of imposter; probably the real lord is long dead, and the reason no-one bats an eye is because he's under some illusion-spell by the "wife" that makes him look like the real deal.

That would certainly explain the weirdness around the castle.
